The Black Death: An Ennin Mystery #10 by Ben Stevens is a horror story wrapped in a mystery. There is a plague spreading across Japan. Ennin-Sensei and Kukai, his scribe travel to the Au Settlement upon the instruction of the Empress of Japan. Both their lives are at risk.

This page turning short story is one of this author's best. I gave it five stars.

"Whole areas became barren of human life; it was realized that the best chance of survival lay in finding some remote place that was largely devoid of other people--where one might thus avoid 'close contact' with others, as it were."
