I received a free kindle copy of Callifornia: A Novel by Edan Lepucki published by Little, Brown & Company from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.I gave it four stars because it was a slow start. The world as they knew it was gone. Cal (aka California) & Frida are struggling day to day. They don't know where they can go to be safe. They don't know who to trust.
They lived in an isolated area & suspect they might be ultimately alone. Then they meet their neighbors, the Miller Family. The mother & Janet react badly to seeing the color red.
They travel through the Spikes to discover a community run by "Mikey" aka "Micah", Frida's missing brother. He had been believed dead from a bomb. Possible Spoiler: Frida has just become pregnant. This community has only adults. What mysterious thing has happened to the children? Will Mikey support his sister in spite of her pregnancy? Will he turn against his buddy, Cal from their past life? Will he support them or exterminate them.
