The Blackhouse
I received an e-copy of The Blackhouse by Peter May from NetGalley. I gave it a four star rating. It is a dark, moody story.
A police detective, Fin Macleod has returned from leave because of the accidental death of his son. He's not through grieving & his marriage is on the rocks.
His assignment is to travel to his home the Isle of Lewis which is a remote & harsh place. There was a similar murder there for him to investigate. He is met with suspicion by some of the people he had left behind eighteen years earlier.
The tale interweaves past & present skillfully. There is a barbaric custom of traveling to an isolated island to kill guga (the Northern Gannet). He had gone when he was young but has repressed the horrible memories of what took place.
This murder mystery explores the way the mind can disguise memories too painful to remember. It is a page turner that leaves behind haunting images of brutality.
