Combustion - Martin J. Smith

Combustion by Martin J. Smith is an intense page-turning mystery. I gave it five stars. It is an absolute must read.

Ron Starke is a detective investigating a murder of Paul Dwyer discovered as a 'floater' in a drained pond.

He had been in line for a promotion when they brought in an outsider, Chief Donna Kerrigan. She overrode many of his ideas and questioned all aspects of his investigation. "Starke tucked his boss's second-guessing into that special place where he stored the things he would never forgive."

His father has Alzheimers and knows his son only intermittently. He now lives in a nursing home since he almost burned down his home. Ron struggles with reminding him who he is. The characters are well written.

There are lots of secrets behind the public lives of the main characters. Some of them may be dangerous. Can the murder be solved before more damage takes place? Can evidence be discovered before the wildfires burn it?

I received a complimentary kindle copy from Diversion Books and NetGalley. That did not change my opinion for this review.
